What Is True Gray Paint Color with No Undertones Look Like?

Before talking further about the choices of true gray paint color with no undertones, first of all, it is best for us to talk about what the meaning of no undertones is.

Surely, this also means that we will discuss a bit about paint color undertones since both are actually inseparable topics.

First of all, let us talk a bit about what undertones actually are.

To start with, you need to know that every interior paint color has two different types of tone in it. Those are mass tone and undertone.

The mass-tone is not hard to understand because it can simply be explained to be the predominant color of each paint color. This can be black, charcoal black, gray, cloud gray, green, olive green, and so on.

Usually, when people are looking for some paints to apply on their interior wall they only focus on the predominant color without realizing that basically, all predominant colors have undertone(s).

Undertone can be explained as a hint of another color that presents behind the predominant color or a different color that is showing the predominant color.

In other words, it can be said that when you apply a certain predominant color on interior walls later you will see that it looks like some other color can also be seen slightly through it and it looks like the predominant color does not really stay the same because of it. This color is called as the undertone.

In order to make it easier for you, let us talk a bit about some example. Since in this post the main topic is about gray color and Benjamin Moore brand, let us take an example of this brand.

benjamin moore revere pewter HC-172

The example is Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter HC-172 and how this paint looks like approximately can be seen in the picture above.

This paint color can be included in the category of light gray paint color and for you to know, this is, as a matter of fact, one from about 9 most favorite gray paint colors from this famous brand.

When it comes to undertone, Revere Pewter can be said to have a warm undertone.

Particularly the undertone is faint green or greige, which is known to be the combination of grey and beige colors. It is reasonable then if when we see this color there is some kind of beige color also pops up from it.

benjamin moore rockport gray HC-105

Another example is Benjamin Moore Rockport Gray HC-105, which is another favorite choice from the brand. Unlike the previous example, this one has a different undertone. It is purple..

Now that the explanation about undertones is (hopefully) clear, we can go back to the main question. What is true gray paint color with no undertones look like?

In simple words, a true gray paint color that does not have any undertones can be described as gray paint color that does not come with other tones popping out after we apply it on the interior wall..

So, it can simply be said that gray paint color with no undertones, which is also called as the true gray color, will stay as it is after you apply it on interior walls and no other colors will be showing through it.

Now that the question is answered, the next question then is; are there any gray paints that really do not have any undertones?

Well, it is too bad to tell you that actually there is not really gray paint color that does not have any undertone at all.

Although so, you do not need to worry because gray paint colors that only have super subtle undertones that they are very suitable to be considered as true and neutral are actually available.

Benjamin Moore is known to be the brand in which such gray paint colors can be found.

Even this Stonington Gray paint has a blue undertone, there is a reason why it is also suitable to be included in the category of no-undertone gray wall paint.

It is because the blue undertone is very subtle that the gray paint looks more like neutral gray paint instead of one that will show blue undertone after being applied to walls.

As a gray paint, this Stonington Gray is not actually the one that shows warm look. It shows cool look in the contrary.

This is maybe something that cannot be separated from the fact that it has a very subtle blue undertone.

Based on the fact, the elegant and timeless gray paint color is more suitable to be used in rooms in which cool atmosphere is found to be beneficial.

This also makes the cool-looking paint is not really suitable for bedroom area since warm look usually makes bedroom area better for comfortable rest.

benjamin moore chelsea gray HC-168

Next, we have Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray HC-168 as another option of remarkable no-undertones gray paint. Just like Stonington Gray, this one also belongs to the Historical Collection.

Unlike the previous two paint colors, this one is not light. It is more suitable to be included in the category of darker gray paint colors instead. However, this paint color is not too dark.

For the undertones, these are very little. This is surely also the main reason why the paint color tends to act in a neutral way.

This makes the paint color to be suitable to use in both small and spacious room. Moreover, this is also known to be the paint color that is suitable to use not only in the interior but also exterior.

Using this paint color especially for home exterior can result in a fantastic look. This is especially when the paint is applied to the housing body.

When you are about to apply this Chelsea Gray paint in one or more rooms in your house, there is a useful tip that is recommended for you to follow.

The tip is none other but to provide an adequate lighting in every room when the paint color is applied.

The reason why adequate lighting is needed is related to the fact that the paint color absorbs light quite well. Without the adequate lighting, the interior space will only look rather heavy.

If you need some inspiration in using this gray paint color, you can check out some ideas below.

benjamin moore storm AF-700

Here, another choice of true gray paint that is recommended to choose is Benjamin Moore Storm AF-700. This one is considered to have medium gray tone.

There are two types of undertones that this gray wall paint has. Those are greige and purple.

Since this paint color is included in the category of no-undertones, the greige and purple undertones are also known to be very very slight. It is reasonable then if these undertones are very hard to notice.

Being in the category of medium gray paint color, Storm still has the ability to absorb light although it is not as strong as the ability owned by darker gray paints.

Although so, there is no need to worry that applying this paint on your interior walls will create a too heavy feeling in there. Still, you are needed to consider about lighting properly when you choose to use this paint color.

If you choose this paint color, you should really consider pairing it with white interior trim. The reason is none other but that the combination of both will create a very decent look.

The last but not least no-undertone gray wall paint is this Benjamin Moore Silver Chain 1472.

This is also known to be the true gray paint that will stay gray on wall regardless other items you place in the same interior space.

Of course, the meaning of no-undertone nickname given to this wall paint is not that the paint really does not have any undertones. As told earlier, factually all paint colors have undertones.

The nickname is given because the undertones of this gray wall paint are very subtle and are quite hard to notice.

The best thing about Silver Chain is that it also owns the characteristic silver color. It is making any interior space gaining a significantly elegant and luxurious look.

  1. Lisa says:

I just painted my entire living room and foyer BM Stonington Gray and there are TONS of blue undertones. So much so, that I have decided to repaint. It’s a beautiful gray depending on the light that hits your room, but beware: the blue is definitely there!

    • Lori says:

Thanks for the heads up, I have been looking high and low for the most neutral gray I can find to go on my ceiling, without very much of the undertones coming out…seems hopeless, beyond battle ship grey and that’s not happening!

    • Valerie says:

What color gray did you eventually repaint it?

    • Kathryn says:

We are looking for a gray without the undertones. Does your room have a lot of blue in it to bring this out or is it just there? We have black and gray in the kitchen but otherwise it is your normal beige and reds. What do you think.

    • Kathryn says:

I guess my question should have been – how did the blue tones show up since it is suppose to have no background tones?

    • Lori says:

Yes, Stonington definitely has a blue undertone and most classify it as a blue-grey color.

    • Moni says:

so what color did you repaint it? Do you like it now?

  2. Susan says:

I have a problem room with both south & north facing light & just painted Mindful Gray SW that has really strong blue/green undertones. I painted the same color in my son’s bedroom & it truly looks “griege”. I don’t know why the tones show up w/ no other blues in the room. Wanted more a a warm, gray to match gray rug, but it should work when pillows are made & ottoman recovered.

  3. GS says:

Every single bm gray paint has severe undertones magnified by the quality of the light in your room. With everyone hankering for a true gray and gray being so popular I don’t know why they cannot come up with a neutral gray pallet of say 10 shades of true gray. At least if you start with a basic mixture of black and white to get a true grayscale you won’t veer so much into blue or yellow or green or violet by the light in your room. This is so frustrating and I think it’s just a scam to get customers to buy tons of sample paints they can’t do anything with. And, in addition, the clerks in the store don’t know anything about color or how to customize it for you.

    • Kay says:

i mix my own paint…Always buy a gallon of 2 of white to add into your paint, I bought a grey color( can’t remember the name) all I did was keep adding White until it was the perfect gray color…And NO blue, green, violet, undertones came out

    • Kathy says:

Buy Dolphin Finn from Behr….I bought a few gallons and also bought a few gals. of white.,,I just used a empty 5 gallon bucket, put 1 gal. of Dolphin Gray and kept adding whit until I got the perfect shade of Gray…It came out perfect!!!! I believe I added gallon to gallon but in the long run I have extra for touch up or whatever…The other gallon of Gray and white I played with and made it a few shades different to use in kitchen for a shade darker and then the top with the first mixture…I still have plenty of paint with enough to do 2 more room, hallway or whatever…It’s cheaper than buying samples that do nothing but waste money…

    • Anna says:

I absolutely agree. It has been incredibly frustrating & expensive

  4. Jo says:

Benjamin Moore, with your expertise, please don’t let us down! Gray is so popular. Please reveal the most gray gray you carry! Thank you!

  5. Ady says:

Hi I’m about to try “silver chain” that’s supposed to have the least undertone ….
I have already Re painted 3 times looking for a true grey.
Also tried mixing black &white to make grey ,but remember that black is always a made up colour so there are still undertones …. help !!!

    • Suzanne says:

Hi, did you like the Silver Chain paint color? Thinking of using it in our new home & picking paint colors is so hard for me!

  6. Michelle English says:

I will go with Silver Chain for my new home.
Which shade of white is the most complementary for the trim and doors?

    • Crystal says:

We painted my daughters room in Mindful Gray initially because I have it in my master bathroom and it appeared to be a “true gray”. It looked beige in her room without a hint of gray. We repainted in Silver Chain and it turned out perfect! With gray, it truly depends on the lighting.

  7. maggie says:

We used gray owl and liked it since it was warm, not too dark, and did not have blue undertones. Natural light may affect the color.

  8. maggie matheson says:

We used gray owl…no undertones. Happy with this choice.

  9. Claudia says:

Used Stonington Gray on the hallway and loved the blue undertones so much I repainted several other rooms with the same color. LOVE it!! Now looking for the right accent color to pair with it in the dining room.

  10. Kaitlyn says:

Cement gray is the best there is for just a gray without blue/green/yellow. Obsessed

    • Deborah says:

I bought a test sample of cement gray and it looks periwinkle purple. Gray owl has green undertones in my home. It’s so frustrating that I can’t find a decent gray out there.

      • Denise says:

I’m having the same problem. I’m trying to paint my fiberglass columns at my new house. Just need a true gray. Help! ASAP!!!!!

  11. Carolyn says:

Stonington Gray looks pink in my dining room. Trying Silver Chain next.

  12. Javier Sáenz says:

    Hello my fellow colorists,
Has anyone used Classic Gray? It’s a warm gray and one of the lightest of the off-white/grey palette. I live in an open floor plan loft space where light streams in from multiple locations. This reality offsets any possibility of applying any one gray color to be the same all the time as different times of the day produces its own undertone. Having experimented with many samples during various times of the year produced different undertones. I discovered that a true gray without undertones does not exist.
I hope that the takeaway from this insight is to focus on which undertone you are willing to accecpt. For me, it was a silver blue that revealed itself during the early afternoon from natural north window light. Although Classic Gray is a warm light gray it did not emit beige or yellow tones. After applying this color I’ve learned that the best way to control the effect you’re after is to illuminate the area with sufficient artificial lighting in the evening and applying the color where there will be lots of natural light. This way one has greater control as to which undertone will be tolerable.
I hope this helps. Good luck to everyone in search of the perfect gray!

    • Anna says:

Classic gray was flat out a creamy beige in my space, zero ‘gray’. I was sooo disappointed.

      • Kathy says:

Yes—very warm tones showed up in artificial light. In my space where there isn’t a lot of natural light, I regretted using classic gray. When we painted in the basement, we found a better solution for dimly lit rooms—Paper White—it’s more of a white-gray and not a speck of yellow. We’re very pleased.

  13. Maria says:

I used Gray Owl in my bedroom which has a lot of light but it’s north facing light. This color looks more gray during the day when the sun is shining bright, however, most of the day the blue undertone comes out – no doubt about it. I asked friends to come to the room and tell me what color they saw during different times of the day and they all commented “light or pale blue” or “bluish gray.” Back to the drawing board.

  14. Sylvia says:

I would like to painting an accent wall in my teen retreat in Chelsea grey. I would love recommendations as to which colour I should paint the hallway. The teen retreat has a large window is an open space to the hallway.

  15. KL says:

Did SW Repose Gray in lower floor of house. It was, color-wise, all over the place. Beautiful in the sunroom, especially with grey linen sheers, my north-facing rooms, and cut by 25%, gorgeous in my upstairs bathrooms. But in darker areas of house, even specific walls that received less light, it looked heavy and not at all pretty. Recommend only for rooms with lots of light. In our next house we’re looking at BM Coventry Gray and Gray Owl, possibly with Classic Gray trim and doors.

  16. Gillian says:

I am going crazy trying to come up with the perfect grey for my kitchen cabinets. I would like something inbetween dark and light grey (I loved the Chelsea grey but hubby thought it was too dark) so back to the drawing board. The trouble is there is so many greys out there that I don’t know which to choose.

  17. Susan Guthrie says:

I have a townhome great room with north facing windows only. I had such a bad experience with gray in my last house (the walls seemed dirty rather than freshly painted), I’ve decided to do more research this time. I want warmth, and the Revere Pewter looks warm as does Storm. I’ve repainted so many rooms over the years – ugh – that I’m going to buy full gallons of my finalists! Any ideas would be appreciated!

  18. Paige says:

I’m looking for a true gray for the basement which does not have any natural light and the carpet is in the blue/purple color family. What would you recommend? I don’t want it to be too dark because it’s a hallway.

  19. Diana Stein says:

I want to paint my house with Chelsea Gray. The dormers a lighter gray. Would you suggest silver chair or Stonington Gray for the best contrat together with Chelsea Gray? Also your favorite white trim to go with it. Thank you so much for your creative input!

  20. Brian says:

Sooo frustrating trying to find a relaxing gray with a dark gray compliment color. Everything turns our the color of the undertone.

  21. Karen Clayton says:

Benjamin Moore Baltic Gray (also called San Antonio Gray). Is the perfect neutral gray, it goes with any color you put with it and even makes oak cabinets look fantastic. Anything on that paint strip works well, too if Baltic Gray is too dark for you. Use the Aura paint to get the truest color out of this paint get Matte finish. You won’t be disappointed
